Togo's food security agency ANSAT is to buy more than 41,000 metric tons of cereals from farmers in 2026, after collecting a record 31,086 tons in 2025, up from 18,307 tons in 2024, the government's news site said, citing agriculture ministry data. ANSAT itself put the target for the purchasing campaign it launched in October at about 13,000 tons for 2.6bn FCFA (€4.0mn), Togo First reported on October 13.
Analysis: The two official purchase figures differ by more than threefold, and neither ANSAT nor the ministry has explained why. They may cover different periods, but that remains unconfirmed. Even the higher figure would equal only about 2% of the forecast 1.96mn-ton cereal harvest. Purchases might support prices in selected areas, particularly after reported maize prices fell 54% year-on-year to 155 FCFA (€0.24) per kilogram in September. Traders and millers in Savanes, the main supplier with 27,862 tons, may be affected first. ANSAT has not released purchase prices or a timetable.
