Senegal had sold 13,879 metric tons of local white rice by October 13 out of 41,729 tons available, Emedia reported from an October 22 interministerial council, which ordered payment of the 50 FCFA (€0.076) per kilogram subsidy owed to rice mills and planned a mechanism linking import volumes to purchases of local rice.
Analysis: Available stock minus sales leaves 27,850 tons unsold, by our calculation. That is more than twice the 13,000 tons the agriculture minister said remained unsold in the Senegal River valley on October 8, suggesting the figures cover different areas or dates. Importers could be affected by the proposed rule linking import volumes to purchases of local rice, alongside the 8 FCFA (€0.012) per kilogram import levy announced in September. The government plans to propose measures to improve local rice competitiveness before year-end. Importers may need to account for domestic purchases when preparing their 2027 plans.
