Niger's meat prices climb 11.1% year-on-year as cereals get cheaper

11.1%

Fresh meat prices in Niger increased 11.1% year-on-year in September 2026, while cereal prices fell 6.3%, statistics institute INS said. Bone-in beef averaged 3,167 FCFA (€4.83) per kilogram nationwide, an increase of 2.4% from August, the agency reported.

Analysis: Meat recorded the fastest food price increase in September, continuing a longer trend. On a 12-month average basis, meat prices rose 12.8% while cereals became 23.4% cheaper. Meat accounts for about 5% of the household spending basket, making higher prices especially relevant for restaurants, caterers and processors. Livestock product exports fell 4.8bn FCFA (€7.3mn) year-on-year in the first quarter, suggesting foreign demand is not the immediate driver, although those data are older. INS's October figures, expected around November 10, should show whether meat prices keep rising.
