Niger plans to purchase 30,285 tons of cereals as millet prices fall

Millet prices in Niger fell 5.3% in September from August to an average of 21,964 FCFA (€33.5) per 100-kilogram sack, statistics institute INS said. The cabinet reviewed plans on October 9 to buy 30,285 metric tons of cereals, including 17,000 tons of millet, according to a government statement republished by Nigerdiaspora.

Analysis: Millet prices generally decline during the harvest, but cereal prices were also 6.3% below a year earlier, INS data show. Regional differences remain large: millet cost 55% more per sack in northern Agadez than in Maradi, suggesting that transport contributes substantially to the gap. At September's average price, buying 17,000 tons of millet would cost about 3.7bn FCFA (€5.7mn), by our calculation, although the cabinet announced no value. Government purchases could support demand for grain traders during harvest. INS's October price report, expected around November 10, should indicate whether purchases slow the decline.
