Guinea-Bissau launches 13.9 km of ring road and highway works

13.9

Guinea-Bissau's transitional government laid the first stone on October 16 for an 11.2-kilometer southern ring road around Bissau, from Sobrade to the navy base, plus the rehabilitation of 2.7 kilometers of the Bissau–Nhacra road, a total of 13.9 kilometers, public works minister José Carlos Esteves said, according to the newspaper O Democrata. Contractor Arezki is due to finish in 18 months, the paper reported.

Analysis: Officials have not disclosed a contract price or funding source, making it impossible to compare the scheme reliably with the 2026 investment budget of 83.2bn FCFA (€127mn). The prime minister cited international partners, but that does not confirm external financing for this project. The ring road is intended to connect with the Safim-Jugudul road, for which BOAD approved 30bn FCFA (€45.7mn) in September. Better links could improve access for freight traveling toward southern and eastern areas. Contractors and materials suppliers still need the procurement details, including who is paying and the contract value.
